I clearly remember the first time I attended a networking event. I was thinking about opening a farm to table restaurant (thinking only). A friend of mine invited me (translation, told me I had to come with her at the last minute so I couldn’t back out) to a women’s networking group. Eighty excited women greeted me, a mic was handed to me and for the first time ever, I made up my first 30 second commercial. I have no idea what I said during those 30 seconds but I do distinctly remember the sheer panic I felt.
Nine years later and not only have I built my business through networking, I have met some of my closest friends. Giving my 30 second commercial still gives me butterflies, but it’s something I have learned to enjoy.
Networking can be overwhelming. What do you say? Who should you talk to? In part two of my series of wrapping up the year with things we all tend to avoid or overlook, I spent some time talking with Jennifer Lynn Robinson, CEO of Purposeful Networking and President of FemCity Philadelphia about how to network effectively. She shares her top tips on how to choose the best places to network, how to network when you are an introvert, why building relationships is critical to the success of your business and much, much more.
